Radio Tracks: Cape public radio group gets grant

Jay Allison's dream of public radio for and on the Cape is taking shape. He
got word last week that the Cape and Islands Community Public Radio Inc.,
of which he is founder and president, is receiving a federal grant of
$173,110 to construct a broadcast facility.
The only stipulation is that the organization must come up with about
$57,000 more from private funds. But Allison, who works as a reporter for
National Public Radio and for ABC's ``Nightline,'' doesn't sound fazed.
``We have a lot of volunteer supporters, and we'll have them hit the
streets, and also hopefully get support from other nonprofits,'' said
Allison from his home in Woods Hole.
His group has applied to the FCC for two frequencies that will cover the
entire Cape, plus Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
The project that has been four years in the works, would bring NPR shows to
the Cape, plus local news and cultural programs, said Alllson. Cape
residents can now get repeater signals of Boston public stations WBUR-FM
(90.9), WGBH-FM (89.7) and WUMB-FM (91.1), although there is no Cape-based
public station.
Allison has set winter of 1997 as the target date for sign-on.
And as if he doesn't have enough to think about, he and his wife are
expecting their third child in February.
